IRON MOUNTAIN - Marilyn "Lala" Sam, 70, of Iron Mountain, passed away Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at her home.

She was born on April 8, 1938, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Elwood and Blanche (Cunningham) Walstrom.

She married James Frank Sam in Chicago in 1958, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1998.

Marilyn was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain. She was a member of the New Hope Church of God. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and talking to her sisters on the phone. She enjoyed playing bingo, slots, and Yahtzee. She also enjoyed baking and cooking.

Lala is survived by her son, David Sam of Iron Mountain; grandchildren, Kashmere Rayann Sam and David Ray Sam II, both of Iron Mountain; sisters, Barbara (Clarence) Bennett of Kingsford, Lois Walstrom of Menominee County, Sharon (Allan) Weber of Homestead, Wis., and Tina (Donald) Schoolfield of Virginia; sister-in-law, Darcey Walstrom and brother-in-law, Ferrand Ethington.

She was preceded in death by a son, James Frank Sam Jr.; sisters, Verna Miron, Waneta Fayas, and Eva Ethington; and a brother, Elwood "Sonny" J. Walstrom Jr.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at the New Hope Church of God in Iron Mountain.

The funeral service will follow at 12 noon. Rev. Tony Morrison will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in her memory.
